Safeguarding Policy Statement
Long Run Coaching
Our commitment
Long Run Coaching is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people. We believe that all children have the right to take part in sport in a safe, positive and supportive environment and to be protected from harm, abuse and exploitation.
The welfare of the child is paramount.
About us
Running
We provide coaching for children and young people under the age of 18, with a focus on speed development, running technique and athletic skill development. Sessions may take place at athletics tracks, sports facilities, schools or public spaces.
Wellbeing and Executive Functioning
Alongside running coaching, I offer wellbeing-focused support for under‑18 athletes, recognising that confidence, communication and organisational skills play a key role in both sporting performance and personal development. This can include helping children build self-confidence, develop positive communication skills, and improve aspects of executive functioning such as focus, planning and self-regulation. Coaching is delivered in an age-appropriate, supportive and non-judgemental way, with an emphasis on creating a safe environment where young people feel comfortable to express themselves, take on challenges and develop both physically and mentally.
Our safeguarding principles
We recognise that:
-
All children, regardless of background or ability, have an equal right to protection from harm.
-
Some children may be more vulnerable due to age, disability, communication needs or life circumstances.
-
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.
-
Listening to children and taking their concerns seriously is essential.
How we keep children safe
We will:
-
Provide a safe, inclusive and supportive coaching environment.
-
Ensure coaching is age‑appropriate and developmentally suitable.
-
Maintain appropriate supervision and clear professional boundaries at all times.
-
Ensure all coaching activities prioritise safety, wellbeing and enjoyment over performance.
-
Follow safer recruitment practices, including DBS checks where required.
-
Ensure safeguarding training is completed and kept up to date.
-
Work in partnership with parents, carers, clubs and other organisations to promote children’s welfare.
Behaviour and conduct
All coaches and adults involved in sessions are expected to:
-
Treat children with respect, dignity and fairness.
-
Avoid any inappropriate language, behaviour or contact.
-
Never coach a child in a private or isolated setting.
-
Use verbal instruction and demonstration rather than physical contact wherever possible.
-
Always act as positive role models.
Responding to concerns
We take all safeguarding concerns seriously.
If there is a concern about a child’s safety or wellbeing, we will:
-
Listen carefully and reassure the child.
-
Not promise confidentiality.
-
Record concerns accurately and promptly.
-
Report concerns to the appropriate safeguarding authority, club welfare officer, or statutory services where necessary.
We follow local safeguarding procedures and national guidance, including NSPCC and statutory child protection frameworks.
Photography and communication
-
Photographs or videos of children will only be taken with informed parental consent.
-
Communication with under‑18s will be appropriate, transparent and, where possible, through parents or carers.
-
No private or secretive communication will take place.
